SUBANG JAYA - Smashing piñatas in the middle of lunch hour may seem crazy but that's what Taylorians did at the Jom4Joy Light Up carnival organised by the Event Management students.
PR major student Amir Putra, 23, took a single swing with a bat to spill the orange ice-cream shaped piñata filled with sweets.
"I just got here and this was the first game I played.
“I'm probably sharing the sweets with my friends," he said.
Assistant event director Stella Tham Shee Loon, 21, had suggested the High Five event which marked the start of Jom4Joy, alternatively called the J.O.M festival.
The entire festival consists of four events, High Five, Light Up, and After Glow and Let's Party, according to the Jom4Joy website.
Tham explained that High Five, which was an event held from 10 Nov to 13 Nov allowed students to use paint to make a print on a large banner and write a positive message. The students are able to personally show their support for this event as well as providing encouragement for others.
Business major student Nur Atiqah binti Mohammad Sani, 19, stamped her hand on a banner for the High Five event.
Sani said when students are in depression, it's good to have a hand even when it's from somebody we don't know.
Students also passed positive messages through an exchange of compliment cards during the events.
Jom4Joy was a series of events meant to cheer up the students in reaction to the prevalence of depression cases in Selangor, as well as to support Befrienders which will receive 10% of the proceeds from the carnival.
